the russian river

The Russian River begins east of Willits, in Mendocino County, flows south past Ukiah into Sonoma County, through the Alexander Valley, and then begins to wind its way through an eclectic series of towns before reaching the Pacific Ocean.

The Russian River is a gentle river, but it still has strong undercurrents, so swimming skills are advised for anyone enjoying the river recreationally. Water levels rise in the winter, and the river even floods on occasion. When water levels drop in the summer, dams are put in place to allow summer visitors to swim, tube, raft, kayak and row its cool waters. Be sure to check bacteria levels before getting in the water.
